FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION

The Higher and Further Education sub group was formed in 2000.  Membership consists of Swansea Metropolitan University (SMU), Swansea University (UCS), City & County of Swansea Sustainable Unit, Gorseinon College, Swansea College and other non-school education providers.  There are formal and informal partnerships between these organisations improving sustainability e.g. the Swansea Bay Car Share Forum www.switchtoshare.com.  As well as a joint project between SMU and UWS offering a module whereby students apply sustainability to their main subject/job.

We share good practice on greening the curriculum and the organisation and have produced a directory of all the Sustainable courses in Swansea and run a national conference on Sustainable Education in Higher Education, which was attended by Jane Davidson, Welsh Assembly Minister for Education and Professors David Herbert and David Warner.  There are a lot of courses containing sustainability ranging from half a day to post graduate courses.

WALES A REGIONAL CENTRE OF EXPERTISE (RCE)

Wales has recently been designated as a Regional Centre of Excellence for ESD.  RCE's aspire to achieve the goals of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005 - 2014), by translating its global objectives into the context of the local communities in which they operate.  An RCE involves school teachers, professors at higher education institutions, environmental NGOs, scientists, researchers, museums, zoos, botanical gardens, local government officials, representatives of local enterprises, volunteers, media, civic associations or individuals who work in the spheres of sustainable development such as economic growth, social development, and environmental protection, students and learners at all levels.  Swansea University ESDGC Team are acting as the RCE Wales Secretariat, and submitted the application to UNU-IAS, with input from the Steering Group, for RCE status.  RCE Wales has received acknowledgement that this has been successful, and from 1st February 2010 is a fully-fledged Regional Centre of Expertise on ESDGC.  There are over 60 world-wide.  More information can be found at www.esd-wales.org.uk
