Two Thousand Years and Counting
From Friday, September 10 2010
To Sunday, September 12 2010
Every day
This is an informal course which will combine fun, learning, enjoyment and site visits within the park. Site visits will include hills, rough tracks and steps.  Suitable footwear and clothing is advised.  Few places can rival Margam Park for the abundance of historical evidence packed into its 800 acres.  Earliest signs of settlement are the Iron Age Hill Fort, which was inhabited by the Silures tribe who were defeated by the Romans in 74AD.  Following the Norman invasion, the magnificent Margam Abbey was built and became one of the richest abbeys in Wales.  Still to be seen in the ruins of its Chapter House are the ‘Masons Marks’, chiselled by the illiterate but highly skilled craftsmen who built the Abbey when it was founded in 1147.  Following the Dissolution Act of 1536, the ‘Vanished House’ was built with stone from the altered Abbey, only to be dismantled before 1786 when the fabulous Orangery was constructed on the site.  The ornate Victorian Margam Castle was later built by the enormously wealthy Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot, who gave his name to the local town.
