As part of National Nest Box Week (14th-21st February - Half Term week)) The Environment Centre has teamed up with BTCV to bring you a workshop in making your very own bird box for you to enjoy in your own garden. Putting up a bird box gives you a great opportunity for protecting wild birds and spotting garden wildlife at first hand. Gardens are a most important habitat for birds. The total area of all gardens in Britain exceeds that of all nature reserves. The natural nest sites on which many of our bird species depend, such as holes in trees and buildings, are fast disappearing as gardens and woods are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. Since National Nest Box Week was launched in 1997, thousands of enthusiastic naturalists across the UK have put up boxes to compensate for this loss.
For just £5 you can make and take home a unique bird box. Suitable for anyone over 12 years old, but that parents need to be aware that there will be tool handling involved.
